Native Tongue Music Publishing

Native Tongue Music Publishing
Native Tongue is an independent music publisher, with offices in Australia and New Zealand.
Besides acquiring rights to local writers, we also administer the works of overseas writers and catalogues for Australia and New Zealand.

Established in 2003, Native Tongue has built a respected catalogue of local writers. We set out to provide writers with a publishing company dedicated to assisting with the development of their skills as songwriters and composers throughout their careers.

Although we are a small company, we see this is one of our major advantages. It enables us to be far more proactive than our competitors and react quickly to the needs of our clients, whether they be film and television companies, commercial advertisers or the bands of which our writers are members.

We see our role as getting out there and getting things done, working with the band, the management, the record label and the distributor to make things happen.

Our job is to work with you to help you achieve your goals, as a songwriter and in many cases; an artist. We have a broad network of contacts we can utilise in all areas of the business – record companies, distributors, booking agents, promoters, publicists, radio, etc.

We will work with you, your management and record distributor to maximise sales of your record. You probably have most bases covered but there will always be something we can do to help squeeze those extra sales. It may be that we help a band get on a festival bill, provide advice on obtaining touring grants or come up with that song opportunity in a film that breaks through at the box office – who knows – it's an ephemeral business and its not always easy pinning down where things will come from.

If you are looking to place songs with other artists we have a worldwide network of contacts who work songs on that basis. If you want to co-write we will work with you to develop connections with writers you want to work with. If you want to compose film or television scores we are ideally placed to help you realise these ambitions.

We get out there and do the hard yards wherever it is required.

We have over the years developed publishing relationships internationally and through our music supervision business have come to know those companies who work particularly hard gaining sync licenses and pursuing the ancillary income that is available around the world. We have also established a network of international sub-publishers to administer our works around the world. In each case our sub-publishers are established independents with a long term track record of working within their own territory.

Native Tongue also enjoys strong relationships with all the major US, UK, Canadian and European music supervisors and can submit clients works for use in a wide range of projects around the world.

We are also one of the only publishers with offices and staff on the ground in Australia and New Zealand enabling us to fully represent your copyrights in the key markets in our home territory.

Native Tongue is closely associated with Mana Music which is the major music supervisor for feature films, television series, and documentaries in Australia and New Zealand. As a result Native Tongue is in a strong position to place its writer's songs in the wide range of projects.

A similar situation applies in respect to television commercials where once again Mana Music is the major provider of licensing services to the advertising agencies.

Calling All Cars

Calling All Cars

They call it second album syndrome. It happens when signs of early promise and the weight of expectation simply prove too much to live up to. It's an ailment that's tripped up countless bands on their unrealised paths to glory. It's difficult to ignore and even harder to overcome. But for Calling All Cars it was all a bit of a non-issue when they returned to the studio to begin work on Dancing With A Dead Man, the follow-up to their highly acclaimed 2010 debut album Hold Hold Fire.

"There are too many bands that do their first album and then kick back, have a year off, and then it comes to their next album and it's like, 'Oh shit!'" notes frontman Haydn Ing. "I always had in the back of my mind that dreaded second album syndrome, so I started writing straight away and we ended up with something like 40 songs to choose from. I think after recording the first album we kind of found our feet and we knew where we wanted to take it from there."

That last point is somewhat of an understatement. Working once again with Shihad sticks man Tom Larkin in his Melbourne studios, Calling All Cars return to the fold with a renewed focus, energy and confidence in their abilities. Whereas its predecessor was a compilation of tracks taken from a five-year period during the band's early incarnation, Dancing With A Dead Man is a fiercely honed record that raises the bar and sheds new light on its makers.

"There's definitely more of a cohesive theme running through it," adds bassist Adam Montgomery. "It's not a concept record at all, but it's got a similar feel running through it, which is exactly what we wanted."

"I think with the first album there was a learning process of finding out what works and what doesn't," chips in drummer James Ing, Haydn's younger brother. "Then I think we were able to narrow things down and find our niche. We basically kept everything we liked from the first album and then reformatted the band and started again in a way."

It doesn't take long to see what they're talking about when listening to Dancing With A Dead Man. The lead single Reptile –with its angry, nihilistic vocals and tightly coiled rhythm section – smashes any preconceptions you might have had about this band. But it's the first of many twists on a record that solidifies Calling All Cars as a brutal force of nature. The venomous love story of Worlds Collide is a foot-stomping, stop-start rocker made up of equal parts vitriol and anguish, while There's A Dead Man In My Room hauntingly exhibits what this band are capable of at slower tempos.

Having toured extensively over the past 18 months with rock heavyweights such as AC/DC, Queens Of The Stone Age and Grinspoon – not to mention a spate of their own headline tours – Calling All Cars have taken lessons learned on the road into the studio with them. As Adam puts it, "If you really want to nail an album, you can't just cruise. At some point you've got to work really hard to get to that level and then try and maintain it. It's not something you can ever perfect."

Thankfully Calling All Cars have heeded their own advice. Dancing With A Dead Man makes a mockery of the so-called second album syndrome. If Calling All Cars' debut was all about them finding their feet, its follow-up has them kicking in the door.

and the QOTSA sideshows will give fans their first chance to hear some of the new songs before the band disappear into the studio with Shihad's Tom Larkin once again taking charge from the producers chair.

Since the release of their self-titled debut EP in 2007 Calling All Cars has maintained a steady pace onward and upward. Hold, Hold, Fire was released in March 2010 to overwhelmingly positive reviews and yielded no less than five songs that smashed through the triple j playlist and excited community radio nationally. The subsequent album launch tour hit every capital city in the country as well as a number of key regional centres and they have maintained a tour heavy lifestyle that saw them share stage and riders with high profile rock acts such as Grinspoon, Butterfly Effect and Biffy Clyro.

That cycle has galvanised Calling All Cars reputation as one of the most exciting young rock acts in Australia and is set to continue in 2011 when they will release the follow up album to Hold, Hold, Fire and get back in that van.
