WATCH Emma Russack By The Shore
Emma Russack
Emma Russack makes simple melodic music, often driven by her deep, haunting voice. Within her singing, instrumental playing, and her artwork, there is a strong, distinctive personal element coming through. Her songs are built with the bare minimum - repetitive guitar motifs make base for what seem like lyrical fragments, sung with great emotion and sincerity.
Lyrically, these are small moments in everyday life, and the surreal aspects and emotional impact of these experiences are brought out. Although at times the vocals are the driving element of her work, she has also proved to be an inspired instrumentalist, creating intimate hiss-drenched lo-fi home recordings. Layers of distorted guitars, strange drum loops, pleasingly out of time piano, and lonely handclaps weave in and out of what is a unique and strangely beautiful project. Her voice is certainly used throughout these recordings to great effect, but it's the playful spontaneous guitar playing and effortless instrumental arrangements that shine here.
